Enhanced recovery through early mobilisation
There are four elements to an enhanced recovery approach and this includes the implementation of an early mobilisation programme.
ICU (Intensive Care Unit) early activity and mobility programmes can deliver clinical and cost improvements3. Earlier sitting, standing and weight bearing are the keys to early mobilisation programmes, which have been shown to decrease the number of days on mechanical ventilation and decrease the length of ICU and hospital stay.
Lord et al (2013) have developed a financial model, showing that investment in ICU early rehabilitation programmes can generate net financial savings for hospitals. It shows that even under the most conservative of estimates, the net cost of implementing an early mobilisation program in the ICU is modest relative to the expected improvements in patient outcomes.
Our customers in healthcare facilities are having to find ways to do more with less funding, less personnel and less resources. Many have already found that renting products allows them to maximise their available budgets as they only pay for what they use when they need it.
